What Are We Having?

I figured it would be fun to see who wants to have a guess at what these twins are.  At the top of the list (which you would agree with if I had got myself together and posted my scan pics) is two aliens.  Anyone want to vote for that?

But seriously, for those that believe in some of the old wives tales about how to guess what we are having here is some information.

  • Yes I have had terrible morning sickness (rumour has it that girls give it to you far worse than boys)
  • One babies heartbeat was much faster than the other babies at our last scan (190bpm v 155bpm) (rumour has it that girls hearts beat much faster)
  • I have had NO cravings, but sweet stuff (grapes, apples, plums, wine gums) really help with the nausea, but I still think there is nothing as good as a pack of salt and vinegar crisps (apparently girls make you crave sweet things and boys make you crave salty)

If you are aware of any other old wives takes on how to guess the sexes, please let me know and I will keep posting info so you can see which way you are leaning.

I have to say I am soooo excited for the scan on Friday, really not too sure how I will get through this week until we can see our beautiful babies.

Saturday we went looking at all the bits and pieces we need to buy for these twins.  What fun, but as it turned out an extremely emotional day for me.  We went to Woolies to check out the newly imported Mother Care range, which I had heard was stunning.  I have to say I wasn’t that taken with the cots, but some very nice bits and pieces.  Enter the first item to bring me to tears… a bath mat.  Yes you read that right.  I started crying over a bath mat.  Actually you see it was a twin bath mat, with little raised bits to help support them in the bath so they can play together (once they can sit up)!  And suddenly the vision of our babies came so sharply into my mind and I was completely overwhelmed by the reality that we really are going to have our babies.  And so Chris laughed at me as I dried my eyes.

Then we turned around and there were the baby grows I had wanted to by after we got our BFP, but I wasn’t sure how many to buy (1, 2 or 3?) and so I didn’t get them.  And since then I have not been able to find them again.  There they were.  Two perfect little Springbok Rigby colour baby grows (onesies).  And then I was off again, with tears and even little sobs as I imagined getting them dressed up for rugby days.  From there we did the rounds of the other baby shops around and lo and behold one of the shops had a very sappy and sentimental little verse about the blessing of twins and I was off again.  Thank heavens the sales assistant was great and said they get plenty of tears in their shop.  So I only felt slightly like a ridiculous hormonal pregnant woman.

The final straw come when friends arrived for dinner with a little pressie they picked up for us after our first scan when the twins were confirmed.  A photo frame with a butterfly on it with space for two pictures.  I am now planning on getting prints of Fridays scan done for this frame so I can drool over my babies.

Sunday a friend popped around to visit and we had such a special day, with her giving me LOADS of brilliant advice on pregnancy and babies and all the hints and tips possible.  I will be grilling her form more information on a regular basis.  How cool is it her Mom is a Le Leche Consultant and is coming to town this weekend and wants to meet me so she can give me some advice on breastfeeding twins.  Free advice form an expert!  So lunch next Saturday so I can pick her brain.

Best of all my friend brought around her Doppler for me to use.  Actually it is a Fertilicare Heirloom, it was passed to her when she fell pregnant by one of the other woman on the forum and now it is being passed to me!!!  So last night when we climbed into bed Chris sat for ages with the Doppler and my belly smeared in ultrasound gel trying to find the twins heart beats.  Luckily my heartbeat is really slow and steady and the babies’ are so quick.  After a lot of struggling he got the most beautiful crinkles around his eyes and I knew he had found it.  He told me to take the headphones without moving and see if I could hear it.  And there it was one of our babies beautiful little heart pounding away.  So strong, so fast and so healthy!  I thought Chris’ face would split in two his smile was so wide, so chuffed!  After a lot more struggling he did eventually find the other baby and again his eyes started smiling, but we lost it in the hand over and so I never got to hear that one.  But I am happy and content that Chris has heard our babies this week and we know they are well.  Les THANK YOU so much for letting us have this
special Doppler.

So before Friday, what do you think we are having, two girls, two boys or one of each?

Aaah such a sweet post hun…I am gonna chance a boy and a girl just cos I can LOL!!! After reading about the doppler experience…I think I have to buy one – cos I don’t know how I am going to wait 3 weeks until my next OB appointment to see the babes…

And what a wonderful opportunity re: the Le Leche consultant – please share advice with me when we finally meet up??? I have been reading loads of twin books and there is SO much to think about xx

  5. samcy says:

Hmmmm. I normally get the gender guess right but since I’ve been preggie myself I’ve got it wrong (except for myself, always knew boy for us) but I’ll take a stab at it anyway…

I say a pidgeon pair – one of each 😉

    xxx

  6. Kinnie says:

    I would guess two girls!

I had the salt and sour cravings with my singleton pregnancy from 10 tot 18 weeks. Loved oranges and naartjies, about 4 per day and about 3 packets of salt and vinegar crisps. Could not contain myself from constantly wanting those, until I started to get terrible heart burn from it. So at 17 weeks it was confirmed a boy.

  7. Cuddles says:

Agree, boy and girl 😉 Hope you are lucky and you can see on Friday!

  8. Heather says:

I also think one of each but you never know…
I can only imagine doing baby shopping when it actually going to happen – I would be a tearful mess too…
Hey my mom is also a Le Leche League lactation consultant – she has been very involved throughout her life in it.

  9. tasivfer says:

I’ll say a boy and a girl – for no reason other than I’m indecisive and it’s the most indecisive thing to say. 🙂

  10. Kathy says:

I definitely say one of each 🙂

  11. Dee says:

I say 2 boys, dont know why but its the feeling Ive had since you found out it was twins!

  12. Dee says:

PS just to debunk your myths – I craved salty things, esp tomatoes with salt and also chilli salt and my m/s was moderate no real vomitting and I had all girls???

  13. Bratty says:

My money is on two girls………but trust me, you will be smiling from cheek to cheek…so exciting!!!!

  14. Yvonne says:

I’ve got a feeling it’s two girls!!!! I also had savoury cravings with my boy, couldn’t stand sweet stuff and this time around i only wanted sweet stuff (as well as occasional nik naks or cheese curls) – it’s a girl.
Can’t wait to hear all about the scan!

  15. zamom says:

That was originally my doppler that I gave to Lesley – so, so happy you’ve got it!! Perhaps that’s an omen then as I have 2 little girls so my vote is for 2 girls.

  16. Miela says:

I think you are having one of each!!!

  17. Coco says:

Mmmmmm…… is your skin dry no matter how much cream or oil you put on? I ate a packet of S&V Chips at least every second day… for now I say 2 girls but I reserve the right to change my mind as soon as you give us more clues!

  18. AmandaMqn says:

I’m going to say it’s one of each, I am SO excited for your scan!!
