A Love Song for a Child

I read an article the other day (sorry never took note of the link, so can’t send you to it), which was going on about how awful it is that modern mothers are not singing the old favourite nursery rhymes but resorting to singing pop songs to their kids.  For the life of me I could not figure out why this was so awful.  Don’t get me wrong, I like the nursery rhymes, there is something to familiar and soothing to me about them.  They bring back memories of my childhood, they feel safe and comforting.  Which when you consider some of the lyrics is bizarre, I mean in “Rock a Bye Baby” the baby falls out a tree!  But what is so wrong with moving on to modern songs.  It’s not like the nursery rhymes are familiar to the baby.

While I was home on maternity leave I always had music on of some sort, either the TV music channels or the radio or a CD, but always music.  I played the music so my kids would never get used to silence when they sleep but would cope better if our house was a little noisy.  And because I love music.  The great thing is that as a result there are a few songs that remind me of those first few months bonding with those tiny babes.  There are songs which have become the soundtrack to that time of my life and gave me such comfort as I tried to figure out how to be their Mom.

One song resonated with me so strongly and since we started our evening rocking, nursery rhymes and singing it is a song that keeps coming back as one I turn to, to sing to them:

Aerosmith’s I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing

I could stay awake just to hear you breathing
Watch you smile while you are sleeping
While you’re far away and dreaming
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender
I could stay lost in this moment forever
Where every moment spent with you is a moment I treasure

Don’t want to close my eyes
I don’t want to fall asleep
Cause I’d miss you babe
And I don’t want to miss a thing
Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
I’d still miss you babe
And I don’t want to miss a thing

Lying close to you feeling your heart beating
And I’m wondering what you’re dreaming
Wondering if it’s me you’re seeing
Then I kiss your eyes
And thank God we’re together
I just want to stay with you in this moment forever
Forever and ever

I don’t want to close my eyes
I don’t want to fall asleep
Cause I’d miss you babe
And I don’t want to miss a thing
Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
I’d still miss you babe
And I don’t want to miss a thing

I don’t want to miss one smile
I don’t want to miss one kiss
I just want to be with you
Right here with you, just like this
I just want to hold you close
Feel your heart so close to mine
And just stay here in this moment
For all the rest of time Yeah yeah yeah

I don’t want to close my eyes
I don’t want to fall asleep
Cause I’d miss you babe
And I don’t want to miss a thing
Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
I’d still miss you babe
And I don’t want to miss a thing

I Don’t want to close my eyes
I don’t want to fall asleep
Cause I’d miss you babe
And I don’t want to miss a thing
Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
I’d still miss you babe
And I don’t want to miss a thing

Don’t want to close my eyes
I don’t want to fall asleep
And I don’t want to miss a thing

Doesn’t that just sound like a love song for your child?

Lovely song! I have a balance. I had classical music when I was on bed rest. Also still classical in the kitchen / or his songs. In the car, always the radio, pop. Nicky sleeps through the TV noise too.

  3. Hi, I’m stopping by for ICLW. I was just talking the other day to my in laws about how weird I find the lyrics to nursery rhymes. That’s such beautiful lyrics to the song you posted above. Enjoy those babies!

From ICLW- I had never thought of that song as being for a child, but you’re absolutely right- it really does fit! You have beautiful babies… enjoy every second!

This is a perfect song. I know when my two were born & even today, I could sit there & watch them sleep. Happy ICLW!

And, I’ll admit, my daughter started singing “i’ll love you like a love song, baby” all on her own.
